Created in 2008 through a collaboration between two professional artists: community-based developer, theatre and performance artist Coman Poon (Toronto, Canada) and cultural worker, choreographer and performance maker Erica Mott (Chicago, USA), re[public] in/decency seeks to engage diverse audiences in our interdisciplinary work while acting as a conduit between social justice activism and conceptual art practice.

Our art-making practice is highly collaborative and we work with both artists across disciplines as well as diverse inter and intra-national communities. Key collaborators include teacher, video and performance artist Sheelah Murthy, experimental media artist Juana Awad, performance artist and scholar, Lisa Biggs and artist and designer, Kristin Mariani Frieman.

Our work embraces cross-cultural perspectives and is fueled by experiential research with arts-mediated dialogue about social, economic and racial justice. We place the artist as a central participant in our society. We believe that through performative action, the creation of strong and resonant images and the power of play, artists may act as catalysts to encourage citizens to reframe and possibly revise their in/action. Our creative projects are informed by personal experience and strives towards building connections between ‘local’ and ‘global’ issues. We focus on inclusively examining the ‘relational’ (composites of unique bodies and stories, political, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, gender inhabitation and artistic constitution) as a key component of collaborative creation.

		Arte No Es Fácil

Inspired by interviews with Cuban Artists at the 2009 Havana Biennial, Arte No Es Fácil is a project based on creating relationships beyond pictures between Cuba and the U.S. through the manifestation of art. The first phase of this project is a three –week interdisciplinary festival of performance and installation January – March 2012 at Links Hall. Each weekend features a pairing of emerging artists from Havana and Chicago with similarities based on art-form, content or strategy. The pairs collaborate on new pieces of work featuring performance art, video, performed and written text, dance, photography and experimental music.

The co-creaters plan on remounting the festival in Havana later in 2012. For more information about the project, please visit www.ArtenoesFacil.com

Re[public] in/decency invites you to experience THE PALIMPSEST PROJECT 1.3, a time-based performance/lecture with Coman Poon (Toronto) and Erica Mott (Chicago) that examines how reified boundaries and palimpsested landscapes affect our embodied sense of self and place.

Patriotism and perversity are confused and conflated as six performers, a live musician, and over fifty sculptural objects lead audience members on a roaming performance through one of Chicago’s best kept secrets, Northerly Island. Combining text, dance, puppetry and sculpture, The Victory Project creates sweeping worlds and strange interactions between moving bodies, sonic objects, and historical propaganda — dismantling the female body in war.

Featuring movement Joy Davis, Silvita Diaz-Brown, Suzy Grant, Karen Faith, Melissa McNamara and Erica Mott developed through intensive research and training in Mott’s unique interdisciplinary methodology.

Chicago composer Ryan Ingebritsen adds a shifting soundscape generated directly from the dancers’ movement and mixed live.

“My choreography highlights the curious body in unusual and often transformational moments, allowing a journey into an ever-evolving landscape for the viewer. Sometimes warped, often political and irreverent this world invites the spectator the re-view and re-envision their own environment,” – Erica Mott.

The Victory Project is supported by a generous grant from Chicago Dance Makers Forum through their Lab Artist Fellowship Program, The Illinois Arts Council Individual Projects Grant, the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation, generous individuals and is in partnership with the Chicago Park District.

Getting to Northerly Island
CTA bus line #146 (Marine-Michigan), CTA Red/ Orange/ Green Line to Roosevelt & State Station. Parking available in the north parking Lot. Bike rack also available.

Friday, August 26, 2011, 8PM to Saturday, August 27, 2011, 8PM
Woman Made Gallery, 685 N Milwaukeee, Chicago, IL 60642 Buy Tickets Online

Please join The Victory Project as we perform a series of performance installations, solos and trios developed during our research/movement development period. These studies will focus on the female body as a representation of the nation state and victory in art and literature from the 17th century to present day. Movement by Erica Mott, Silvia Diaz-Brown, Joy Davis, and Karen Faith.

The Victory Project is a multi-year inquiry and thematic umbrella for multi-disciplinary artistic responses to women’s bodies and notions of victory. This year is focused on an evening length work that incorporates image, text, movement and elements of puppetry to dismantle body parts and allegories that confuse and conflate patriotism and perversity.

It is presented as a series of delicate and intimate duets between mundane objects and the human body awkwardly juxtaposed with visually arresting and sometimes disturbing chorus pieces creating darkly humorous shifts in tone and rhythm.

The Victory Project is supported by a generous grant from Chicago Dance Makers Forum through their Lab Artist Fellowship Program, The Illinois Arts Council Individual Projects Grant and the Richard H. Driehuas Foundation.
